Our first Service Design Masterclass is over – and it was amazing!!!
The Masterclass took place this August at the Alpengasthof Bad Rothenbrunnen, a wonderful jewel in the middle of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Vorarlberg, Austria. Maurício Manhães – Professor of Service Design and Design Researcher – came fully packed with know how and his new and workable method that uses language as the main component of service prototypes.
This method is based on the findings of the German philosopher and sociologist Jürgen Habermas and works as an application in any language (concerns about the workshop language English are therefore not necessary). It provides a new perspective on data analysis, combines qualitative and quantitative research and places the data in a social context. The method is very practical and increases the quality of the data analysis results enormously. In addition to being used in research, reading and interpreting data for a concrete social context, this approach can also be applied in all other phases of the service design process, e.g. in idea review and testing.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SERVICE DESIGN MASTERCLASS
A lot has happened in the last few years in the field of service design education. There are many providers for all kinds of workshops and boot camps. However, the offer concentrates on "basics" and newcomers. But when it comes to trainings for service design professionals, it gets thin.
It's a pity, because we from Service Design Vorarlberg want to continue to learn, to deal intensively with effective service design methods, tools and their application. If we draw an ideal picture of such a "Service Design Masterclass", beside the training, we would also like to network with other service design experts and exchange ideas about our projects .
"How can we take matters into our own hands?", we asked ourselves and came up with the following idea: Why not simply bring the experts we think we can learn from to Vorarlberg and invite our service design colleagues to join us?
Said, done – we proudly did it and hosted our first Service Design Masterclass with Maurício Manhães in August this year.
